Via the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Palo Alto, CA-based HP has issued an expansion of its earlier recall of notebook batteries that pose a burn hazard. Today, the recall first announced in June affects batteries shipped with certain HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion Notebook Computers sold worldwide from March 2013 through October 2016. The expansion of the recall adds batteries that were sold as accessories or spares, or provided as replacements through the company's support departments.

At issue is a defect that causes the batteries to overheat, placing users at risk of burns and fires that could result in property damage.

“Because these batteries pose a fire and burn hazard, it is essential to recheck your battery, even if you did so previously and were informed that it was not affected,” an HP spokesperson said in a media release. “However if you have already received a replacement battery, you are not affected by this expansion.”

The company asks that customers cease the use of affected batteries immediately. While the company is notifying registered customers whose purchased products are affected, you may also take your battery to your nearest HP dealer or check online to see if your battery is included in the recall.

However, if you have suffered an injury or property loss caused by an overheated battery, keep the battery, computer, and all other potential evidence intact, and get medical treatment. Then, call 877-798-7700 to speak with a personal injury attorney with Gainesville's Schackow & Mercadante.
